The Wharf Presentation for ASCE Iowa Section

April 21, 2021 - 7:00pm

On Wednesday April 21st, SK&A Project Manager, Nima Arjomandnia, PE, and Project Engineers, Maurice O’Connor, PE, and Matt Holtschneider, EIT conducted a virtual presentation on the The Wharf for the ASCE Iowa Section’s joint meeting with the Central IOWA YMG and the ISU Student Chapter.  The Wharf is a multi-phased, mixed-use waterfront development located on the historic Washington Channel.  The master plan for the high-profile development integrates residential, office, retail, hotel, and cultural facilities with numerous public spaces, including a three-acre waterfront park, along 27 acres of land overlooking the Potomac River.

The presentation covered the overall history and development of the Wharf, the design and construction for both phases of the project, as well as the challenges faced on the large-scale project.  Topics such as the WMATA tunnel location, working in a flood zone, landscape and hardscape features, garage design, and the various design software used for the project were discussed.  The Wharf development has won numerous project awards from institutions such as AIA, NAIOP, Urban Land Institute, ASCE-NCS, Washington Building Congress, and CREW DC.
