Press House Warehouse in Architecture DC Magazine

July 05, 2023

Now a mixed-use complex, the 462,511 SF historic building at 301 N Street NE was originally a warehouse designed in 1931 for the National Capital Press. This Summer 2023 Architecture DC magazine article highlights the transformation of the 2nd and 3rd floors, home to the new offices of Hickok Cole Architects. Yolanda Cole, FAIA reflects that their interest in this Union Market building began ten years ago when they were working on a neighboring project. “The building’s generous, loft-like open plan, illuminated by oversized windows, was an obvious attraction, but the energy of the developing neighborhood appealed to the growing firm, as well.” (Carnes, 68)

SK&A Structural Engineers provided not only the repair and restoration design services for this renovation project completed in 2022, but had also performed historic assessments, structural probes, testing and inspections, and façade services in 2016. We were pleased to partner with long-time clients Hickok Cole to design the very space they would themselves occupy. The talented design and construction team for the Press House Warehouse also included Torti Gallas + Partners, Foulger Pratt, and James Davis Construction.
