Navy Yard Walking Tour

April 25, 2023

Over 70 members and guests of SEA MW (Structural Engineers Association of Metropolitan Washington) walked a 1.5 mile trek around the Navy Yard, one of the most vibrantly transformed neighborhoods of Washington, DC. Since the Nationals Ballpark opened in 2008, numerous projects have been built to create a bustling live-work-play destination. During this Navy Yard walking tour on April 25, 2023, participants got to meet the engineers who helped design and build the structures that have shaped this area between the Anacostia River and Capitol Hill.

The 2-hour tour passed by dozens of SK&A-engineered projects, but there was only time to stop and discuss a few of them, including: West Half Street, a 650,000 SF Mixed Use Development with dramatic cantilevered terraces; The Guild, a 198-unit residential building with a flood-resistant design; The Thompson Hotel, a 10-story building with luxury suites and a rooftop bar; The Arris, an 11-story multifamily building on the Navy Yard; and DC Water Headquarters, an award-winning, 150,000 SF state-of-the-art structure.

The SK&A engineers who shared insights on the design and construction of the above projects were: Naina Bhanot, EIT, LEED AP, Josh Woolcock, PE, LEED AP, and James Chavin-Grant, PE, SE, CDT. Also in attendance were the following team members: David Pirnia, PE, Ammar Motorwala, PE, Welton Lai, EIT, and Shambi Eubanks.
