The 2025 SEA-MW Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards Gala, held at the historic Mayflower Hotel, brought together the DC region’s structural engineering community to celebrate innovation, technical excellence, and impactful collaboration across the industry.
We’re thrilled to share that three of SK&A’s projects were recognized this year, with one earning a top honor:
Outstanding Project Award
The Langston | New Construction, $40M–$100M
Located in DC’s vibrant Shaw neighborhood, The Langston is a nine-story, 204-unit mixed-use residential building that rises above WMATA’s dual green-line metro tunnels. SK&A engineered an innovative solution to “hang” the northeast portion of the structure off the rest of the building, using a system of hanging concrete columns, transferring the load from the concrete slabs into the main building’s sloping columns. During construction, temporary steel trusses were employed in lieu of the usual formwork shoring system, which would have surcharged the metro tunnels.
Congratulations to Hakan, Monika, and Macenzie for their exceptional work on this technically complex and elegant solution.
Industry Partners: CBRE, Square 417, LLC, Cooper Carry, and HITT Contracting
Merit Award
2100 Pennsylvania Avenue | New Construction, Over $100M
This striking 11-story, V-shaped office tower on The George Washington University campus features post-tensioned slabs, long-span cantilevers, and a dramatic glass atrium supported by 30-to70-foot steel trusses. With sustainability and coordination at its core, the project achieved LEED Gold certification and navigated complex foundation conditions in WMATA’s zone of influence.
Kudos to Hakan, Glenn, Tony, Jonathan, Ahmed, and Gordon for their expertise in making this landmark building a reality.
Industry Partners: Pelli Clarke & Partners, WDG Architecture, and Balfour Beatty
Merit Award
The Annex on 12th (Cotton Annex) | Renovation, $25M–$75M
Transforming a vacant 1930s federal warehouse into a vibrant residential development, The Annex on 12th involved innovative underpinning, adaptive reuse of foundations, and highly coordinated detailing to connect a new 13-story tower with the historic building. SK&A designed sliding connections between the structures to allow for differential movement and oversaw structural modifications for MEP integration and new architectural features.
Applause to Walid, Cindy, Monika, Ahmed, Sebastian, and Siddhant for preserving the past while building for the future.
Industry Partners: Carmel Partners, Design Collective, and Carmel Construction
