Topping Out The Grandview Senior Living’s First Phase

The first phase of Erickson Senior Living’s 33-acre redevelopment project in Bethesda, MD just topped out! SK&A was pleased to attend the topping-out celebration for Phase RB 1.1, hosted by Whiting-Turner Contracting Company on September 17, 2024. SK&A serves as the structural engineer for this transformative project, continuing our established partnerships with Hord Coplan Macht, Whiting-Turner, and Erickson Senior Living, with whom we have collaborated on numerous projects. This redevelopment is part of Erickson Senior Living’s plan to create a new urban-style continuing care retirement community (CCRC), offering over 1,400 units for independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled care.

Erickson Senior Living acquired the 33-acre site, formerly Marriott International Headquarters, to build its first “vertical” community, known as The Grandview. Designed by Hord Coplan Macht, Phase 1 of the project includes two 12-story independent living residential towers, a parking garage, and a 5,000-square-foot Marketing Center, which serves as a welcoming hub for visitors and future residents. The design aims to maximize views from living units while creating a walkable community with direct access to green spaces and a grand pedestrian plaza. The buildings will include a variety of residential units, dining options, fitness centers, and other amenities that foster an active and connected lifestyle for seniors aged 62 and up.

Future phases will introduce assisted living facilities and additional community amenities such as pickleball courts, meditation areas, and walking trails. Erickson’s focus on resident well-being is evident in the inclusion of programs that support resilience and mental health. The Grandview reflects Erickson’s evolving approach to senior living, bringing the “in-demand” lifestyle of its CCRCs to an urban setting while staying responsive to the changing needs of residents.
