Over the past twenty years, Joseph (Joe) Uchno, PE has played a key role in delivering efficient and high-quality structural solutions across a wide range of projects and structural systems, including:
- Towers Crescent Building B and the Tysons Corner Pedestrian Bridge (SEA-MW Merit Award & ACI Award of Excellence)
- Grandview Senior Living in Bethesda
- The Sage, Verizon Site Residential in Arlington
- The Altaire at 400 Army Navy Drive in Arlington
- Flats 8300 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda
- Purple Line Operations and Maintenance Facility in Glenridge and Lyttonsville
- Towson Circle Apartments in Towson
- Duball Rockville Phase II
A native of State College, Pennsylvania, Joe earned his Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from Penn State in 1999. Prior to joining SK&A, Joe had six years of challenging project experience in New York City, where he was employed by Goldreich Engineering and Weiskopf & Pickworth/Severud Associates. He managed projects from low and mid-rise new construction utilizing various structural systems. He also designed multiple soil retention solutions for difficult site conditions.
Over the past two decades at SK&A, he has built a diverse portfolio of work, including high-rise office and residential towers, mixed-use buildings with grocery stores, design-build ventures, and parking garages. Joe is one of the rare individuals in the firm and the industry in general with experience and versatility in all structural systems. He has never hesitated to take on projects of all sizes, systems, market sectors, or types. Nothing is too small, and nothing is too large or complicated. No matter what the task or project was, Joe approached it with the same calm, level-headed, and efficient manner. Within the firm, Joe has become a leader, particularly in light gauge systems, both in experience and service on the light gauge technical committee. He is also more than willing to volunteer for anything the firm needs. Whether being one of our two resident contract review specialists in the office, network folder restructuring, or technical committee and business development work, Joe steps up to complete the task timely and efficiently. Who can forget his legendary contract review presentation, which made a completely dry topic entertaining for the whole office?
“There’s also a lot more to Joe than being an Associate at SK&A. The more we got to know him over the years, the more we appreciated the individual in addition to the engineer. Beyond his professional achievements, Joe is dedicated to community service. He regularly volunteers with Canstruction in support of the Capital Food Bank, and he serves on the Penn State Alumni Society of Architectural Engineers Board of Directors. Joe is a husband to a lovely spouse, Greer, who happens to be an attorney and they both have their hands full parenting two sons, James and Reuben. He enjoys playing golf, performing improv comedy, cooking, practicing Muay Thai, and, most of all, spending time with his family.
It has been a pleasure to work alongside Joe these past twenty years. Joe was my cubicle neighbor when he first joined the firm. He was reserved and relatively quiet and I did not get to know him much those early years. As time went on and I had the pleasure of getting to know the individual, I developed a deep appreciation and respect for him. It was a bit of a shock for me when I first found out he performed Improv but then I started noticing the subtle dry-witty humor that was always inserted among casual work conversation that I had prior missed. This is now one of my favorite things about him in addition to his efficiency, versatility, and reliability!”
