The design of the recently renovated Royal Norwegian Embassy honors the country’s rich heritage of woodworking, shipbuilding, and fisheries by incorporating architectural and structural elements that reflect these traditions. Featured in the July/August 2022 edition of Home and Design magazine, the renovation of the 1977-built Norwegian Embassy and Chancery is lauded for a sustainable and creative design. “Inside, a finned curtainwall of Norwegian spruce forms a cocoon around spaces including the lobby atrium, where an open stair connects to a two-story social hub. Diplomatic offices are demarcated by a copper-clad timber hull that recalls Viking ships,” writes Sanders of Home and Design.
Fentress Architects created this striking design and Whiting-Turner was the renovation contractor. SK&A Structural Engineers provided the existing condition assessment, waterproofing consulting, and the new structural design. SK&A also collaborated with Fentress to design the eye-catching curved architectural features.
