SK&A Competes in Canstruction 2013

August 31, 2013

SK&A participated in the 2013 Canstruction charity event sponsored by the Washington Architecture Foundation (WAF) and the Society of Design Administration, held this September at the National Building Museum.

Canstruction is a popular competition in which competing teams build giant-sized sculptures made entirely out of canned food. Canstruction events are held throughout the U.S., supported by participants and contributions from the architecture, engineering, construction and local communities at-large. The local DC event, coordinated by WAF, is also made possible through contributions from the Builder's Ball, Safeway, The National Building Museum and TW Perry.

As a member of the WDG Architecture team, SK&A's team members assisted in building WDG's interpretation of the Smithsonian's giant Bubble art exhibit that was designed for the Hirshhorn Museum. Although the original Bubble exhibit was never constructed, the Bubble art installation was a very popular concept at this year's competition, which had an overall theme of "The National Mall".  At the end of the competition and the week-long viewing open to the public, the completed can-based structures were "de-canstructed" and all cans were donated to the Capital Area Food Bank. Check out WDG's completed sculpture, along with the many other creative designs, in our gallery here.
