DC Water HQ Wins AIA National Award

February 09, 2023

The DC Water Headquarters project was just awarded the National Innovation Award for Holistic Design by The American Institute of Architects (AIA). AIA compliments the project team saying that “Despite the challenges presented by site, budget, and critical existing infrastructure, the team found opportunities to deliver an elegant building that provides an architectural nexus for the surrounding neighborhood.”  (aia.org/showcases/6486248-dc-water-headquarters).

SK&A was pleased to collaborate with architecture firm Smithgroup, providing the structural engineering for this truly innovative design. The award jury commented that “all architects should carefully examine this project when seeking to incorporate sustainable best practices into their work.” The AIA award commentary goes on to describe the DC Water and Sewer Authority owned project, saying “The new headquarters is built above the 1960s station on a narrow wedge of land that sits in the Anacostia River floodplain among a flourishing mixed-use neighborhood. Through this project, what was once an unflattering industrial area is now a showcase for innovation for DC Water.”

SK&A commends Smithgroup on this significant national award. We also recognize Scott B. Stewart, PE, SE and James Chavin-Grant, PE, SE, CDT, our engineering team members who contributed to this project’s successful completion.

Congratulations also to these firms who were on the DC Water Headquarters project team:

  • Leuterio Thomas – Associate Architect
  • Skanska USA Building – Design Build Contractor
  • Wiles Mensch Corporation – Civil Engineer
  • JVP Engineers – MEP
  • OEHME van Sweden – Landscape Architect
