Williams & Connolly at The Wharf in ArchitectureDC

October 15, 2025

We are delighted to share that the Williams & Connolly headquarters at 670 and 680 Maine Avenue SW has been featured in the Fall 2025 issue of ArchitectureDC magazine. The project was recognized with a Citation for Integration in Interior Architecture, highlighting its seamless fusion of aesthetic clarity and technical precision.

A Landmark Project at The Wharf

Designed as part of the dynamic District Wharf development, the two 11-story towers of 670 and 680 Maine are joined by a post-tensioned pedestrian bridge with a dramatic central opening known as The Oculus. This striking architectural feature has quickly become a recognizable landmark at The Wharf, framing views of the sky while uniting the buildings in both structure and identity.

“Facing the Southwest DC Waterfront, within the District Wharf development, stands a pair of office towers linked by a deep bridge at the second-floor level. The center of the bridge has been carved out to create an oculus—an oval void open to the sky.” ~ArchitectureDC, 2025
A Collaboration of Visionaries

This ambitious project was made possible through the collective expertise of the design and construction team: Perkins & Will as Architect/Interior Designer, SHoP Architects as Base Building Design Architect, WDG Architecture as Base Building Architect of Record, Savills as Project Manager, and HITT as General Contractor.

SK&A’s Role

As Structural Engineer of Record, SK&A played a critical role in realizing the project’s architectural ambitions. Our engineers developed elegant solutions to support the ambitious spans and curvilinear forms while ensuring the structural integrity of the distinctive oculus feature and tower connection. The SK&A team—Hakan Onel, PE, SE; Glenn Weatherly, PE; Nima Arjomandnia, PE, PMP; and Maurice O’Connor, PE—brought deep expertise and ingenuity, enabling the project’s bold architectural language to be translated into enduring structure.

Designed for the Future

Beyond its visual impact, the Williams & Connolly headquarters is LEED Gold certified, with a strong emphasis on natural lighting, reduced energy consumption, and locally sourced materials. Health-conscious amenities, including abundant natural light and carefully curated food options, underscore the project’s commitment to occupant well-being.
