CanstructionDC 2019 at Columbia Square

November 24, 2019 - 4:10pm to December 2, 2019 - 4:10pm
Columbia Square, 555 13th Street NW, Washington, DC 20004

SK&A teamed with Cooper Carry Architects and GHT Limited and competed in this year's CanstructionDC competition.  Canstruction is a fundraising event held throughout the U.S., and internationally, where competing teams build large-scale sculptures made out of canned food.  At the end of each competition, the sculptures are “de-canstructed” and donated to local food banks, such as the Capital Area Food Bank. Our local DC competition is sponsored by the Washington Architectural Foundation (WAF), the non-profit arm to the DC Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA/DC).  The theme for this year's CanstructionDC competition was "The 1980s" and the Cooper Carry/SK&A/GHT team's sculpture was a fighter jet, based on the popular 80's "Top Gun" movie.  The team won an award for "Best Original Design/Juror's Favorite" and helped donate over 82,000 cans to food banks.

The sculptures were primarily built in the Columbia Square office building lobby (located at 555 13th Street, NW) on Sunday, November 24th, with additional sculptures built at AIA's National Headquarters (1735 New York Avenue, NW).  The sculptures were on display to the public from Monday, November 25th through Friday, November 29th, 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.
