Some projects shape lives more than skylines.
SK&A Structural Engineers was pleased to once again support National Rebuilding Day through our continued involvement with the Structural Engineers Association of Metropolitan Washington (SEA-MW) and Rebuilding Together. Held each year on the last Saturday in April, the nationwide volunteer initiative brings communities together to complete critical home repairs that help low-income homeowners remain in their homes safely and independently.
This year’s SEA-MW volunteer team worked at a residence in Alexandria, where an elderly couple needed assistance with a variety of home maintenance and accessibility improvements. Representing SK&A, Monika Crandall, PE, LEED AP joined fellow volunteers for a full day of hands-on service.
A Day of Meaningful Work
Volunteers divided into teams to address both interior and exterior needs throughout the property. Work included:
- Decluttering and general property cleanup
- Yard work and fence repairs
- Plumbing improvements
- Interior painting
- Installation of grab bars and railings to improve accessibility and safety
Why It Matters
Programs like National Rebuilding Day demonstrate the impact skilled volunteers can make in a single day. For older adults especially, modest repairs and accessibility upgrades can significantly improve quality of life and reduce everyday risks at home.
A Culture of Service
At SK&A, community involvement remains an important part of who we are. Opportunities like this allow our team members to use their time, energy, and problem-solving mindset in service of neighbors across the region.
We thank SEA-MW and Rebuilding Together for organizing another meaningful day of service, and we recognize Monika for representing SK&A in support of this important effort.
