The Wren Wins Washingtonian Magazine Award

August 28, 2024

The Wren at 965 Florida Avenue has been honored with the Residential Design Award in the Multifamily Housing category by Washingtonian Magazine and the D.C. Chapter of The American Institute of Architects (AIA). SK&A is proud to have partnered with Hord Coplan Macht, JBG Smith, and MRP Realty on this remarkable 403,000-square-foot mixed-use development.

The Wren, located in the vibrant Shaw District of Washington, DC, boasts 351,000 square feet of residential space, seamlessly integrated with a Whole Foods Market and supported by three levels of below-grade parking. This LEED Gold certified development is a beautiful addition to the neighborhood, featuring an open-air connecting bridge that adds to its architectural allure.

Washingtonian Magazine describes the project:

“From the outset, one of the main goals was to connect this building to the community,” says architect Frank André of the Wren, a 433-unit mixed-use building in DC’s Shaw neighborhood. The 12-story U-shaped building’s metal-and-brick cladding references both the area’s industrial past and nearby Howard University. At street level, neighbors benefit from a new Whole Foods and park-like green space, while residents enjoy rooftop amenities such as a community garden, dog run, pool, clubhouse, and skyway with grilling and lounge areas. In an effort to promote fair housing, 30 percent of the units will be offered at a lower rent structure.”

We congratulate the entire design and construction team and recognize the efforts of our SK&A Structural Engineers who contributed to this project’s success: Walid Choueiri, PE, SE, Sebastian Jongerius, PE, and Xavier McGruder.
