This holiday season, SK&A Structural Engineers swapped concrete columns for candy canes, designing and building the “Peppermintheon” as part of the annual Gingertown event on December 3, 2024. Themed “Rome Sweet Rome,” this year’s master plan was inspired by the grandeur of Ancient Rome, with gingerbread structures taking cues from iconic Roman architecture.
Our “Peppermintheon” stood proudly among other candy creations, showcasing the engineering ingenuity of our team of “engineering elves.” But Gingertown structures are not just eye candy—they bring joy to the community. This whimsical tradition supports local charities, with this year’s proceeds benefiting Children’s National Medical Center, Community of Hope, Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital, So Others Might Eat, and the Wendt Center for Loss and Healing.
Since its founding in 2006 by David M. Schwarz Architects, Gingertown has united architects, engineers, and builders from across the DC area to construct an entire town out of gingerbread and other sweet treats. David M. Schwarz Architects, an outstanding architectural firm with whom SK&A has partnered on numerous projects, develops a new master plan each year for a candy-coated town.
We’re delighted to have been part of this festive event and to support the meaningful work of Gingertown’s organizers and beneficiaries. The holidays are a time for giving, and community-impact initiatives remind us of the importance of building joy, one gingerbread structure at a time.
Happy Holidays from SK&A!
