The annual AIA Baltimore Excellence in Design Awards program recognizes excellence in architectural design.
The Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, designed by Perkins Eastman, won the “Grand Design Award,” and was also awarded for “Excellence in Design” and “Excellence in Sustainability” in AIA Baltimore’s 2022 competition. “Excellence in Design” addresses how the design elevates the human experience while addressing the project’s practical needs. “Excellence in Sustainability” recognizes a design that takes a progressive approach to advancing the missions of sustainability and/or resiliency.
SK&A provided the structural engineering services for this new 200,000-square-foot, four-story, innovative high school facility. A learning commons area is centrally positioned within the facility’s four-story atrium to host interactive and collaborative activities. The new school is constructed on the former Shaw Elementary School site. The site also incorporates public recreation facilities, including a skate park, dog park, and basketball courts. The project features indoor and outdoor classroom spaces, rooftop terraces, an outdoor plaza, a new outdoor athletic field, and a new gymnasium. The $118M design-build project was constructed by MCN Build and completed in 2021.
