There’s something truly special about giving back to the community and igniting curiosity in the next generation. Recently, two of our SK&A Project Managers, Macenzie Smith, PE, SE, and Sara Zaman, PE, had the privilege of volunteering with CREW DC at Phelps ACE High School. The experience was nothing short of inspiring.
The CREW program kicked things off by diving into what engineering really means: designing structures, solving problems, and blending science, math, and creativity to build things that make life better for everyone. The students learned about the variety of engineering paths—like civil versus environmental—and how a building is more than just walls and a roof. We compared it to the human body: a framework of “bones” (structural members) united to support the “body” (the building itself), standing strong against forces like wind and earthquakes.
Then came the fun part—a hands-on challenge! Armed with just spaghetti, string, tape, and a marshmallow, the students competed to construct the tallest tower capable of supporting that fluffy topper. Watching their ingenuity and teamwork in action was a reminder of why we do what we do.
At SK&A, we’re passionate about inspiring future engineers. Sharing our knowledge with the bright minds at Phelps ACE High School—a place dedicated to preparing students for careers in architecture, construction, and engineering—was an absolute joy. Here’s to building not just structures, but also the dreams of tomorrow’s problem-solvers!
