Celebrating Mike’s 5th Year at SK&A

February 26, 2024

Mike Muir, PE is a Structural Engineer III with the Repair + Restoration group in our Potomac, MD office. Over the past five years, he has made valuable contributions to numerous projects, including:

  • Virginia Tech Innovation Campus Academic Building in Alexandria, VA
  • Allegro Alley Concrete Repairs in Washington, DC
  • Cavalier Club Apartments in Falls Church, VA
  • Van Ness North Surveys and Repairs in Washington, DC
  • Lidl Stores Structural Inspections, Nationwide

When asked about the most important aspect of Repair and Restoration work, Mike replied, “Attention to detail. …It is important to make sure we correct the issue and not miss anything.” He reflected that this work impacts both the safety of individuals at a site as well as the integrity of structures.

Mike grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Geology from Guilford College, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland. In 2019, he was honored with a University of Maryland ACI Award of Excellence.  He has an admirable record of volunteerism and “giving back,” having worked as a Construction Crew Leader with Habitat for Humanity in both Maine and Hawaii. He also led a 34-person cross-country bicycling “Bike and Build” affordable housing fundraiser, worked as a wildland firefighter through AmeriCorps in California, and worked as a demolition crew leader for Re-Use Hawaii. Mike’s efforts have contributed to the construction of homes in 24 different states!

“It has been a pleasure to work with and get to know Mike over the past several years.  From the beginning, Mike has displayed a strong interest in learning new skills and has had great success with quickly obtaining certifications through WACEL, ICRI, BESI and other organizations related to performing concrete, steel, and building enclosure inspections, testing, and evaluations.  This has allowed Mike to become a versatile engineer covering multiple project types as well as a mentor to others pursuing similar certifications.  Mike is a great co-worker who is always willing to help his colleagues and share his knowledge.  He is a very valuable member of our team.”
