Anacostia Recreation Center Groundbreaking

August 21, 2023

The Anacostia Recreation Center, which broke ground on August 21, 2023, is expected to open in late 2024. It will feature a full-size gymnasium, basketball court, demonstration kitchen, and classrooms inside. Additionally, outdoor spaces will include playgrounds, a multi-use field, and walking paths. The $15 million DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) facility is being built in Ward 8 and is targeting LEED Silver Certification. DPR, DGS, and DC Public Schools collaborated together on the facility design, gathering input from the community to ensure the space met the needs of the nearby residents.

The design and construction team for this project include: DLR Group architects, SK&A Structural Engineers, A Morton Thomas, Chiaramonte Construction, and ECS Capitol Services. Our SK&A team members David Pirnia, PE, and Maurice O’Connor, PE, attended the groundbreaking and are pleased to provide the structural engineering design for this recreation center to serve the DC Ward 8 community.
