Good Sports for a Good Cause: SK&A Competes in JDRF's Real Estate Games

July 2, 2013

For the 7th consecutive year, SK&A employees donned flip flops, wielded hockey sticks from rolling office chairs, and shot hoops like champs during the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) Real Estate Games. This past June at AmericanUniversity in WashingtonDC, The SK&A Group supported JDRF in their efforts to raise money for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. For this year’s event, SK&A was involved as a bronze medal level sponsor and backed a team of SK&A employees daring enough to contend in the series of competitive sporting games. As a company that values active involvement and participation in the community, The SK&A Group had a wonderful time competing for a good cause against their colleagues in the building industry while bonding as a company.

In spite of the ominous weather, SK&A’s teams - basketball, chair hockey, foosball, table tennis, lacrosse, track, celebrity relay, biking, and volleyball - all put forth great efforts.  However, after a few wins, the teams were eventually eliminated from their respective tournaments.  The group’s crowning achievement this year goes to their obstacle course team, who took 3rd place overall.  Rupa Patel, Assistant Project Manager, said, “The JDRF Real Estate Games are a great way for all of our industry firms to team up and support a really worthy cause. It’s also a fun way to get to know our colleagues, as well as others in the industry, outside of project deadlines and jobsites”.

About JDRF

Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has been devoted to improving the lives of every person affected by type 1 diabetes by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for preventing, treating, and curing the disease.  The Games, an Olympic-style sporting event, is a way for companies involved in commercial real estate (developers, architects, engineers, brokers, contractors, etc.) to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  More than 2,000 people from the commercial real estate community participate and compete against one another in the all-day Olympic-style sporting event.  This year’s event, the Games’ 24th Annual, raised over $400,000 for its very important cause.
