Three Winning Projects: The 2022 USGBC NCR Awards

June 21, 2022

Three SK&A projects won awards at the USGBC National Capital Region Community Leader Awards: The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) headquarters; The Marie Reed Community Learning Center; and 1771 N Street NW.

We congratulate our design and construction partners on each of these award-winning projects.

The awards, presented during the USGBC “A Midsummer Night’s Green” event on July 21st, “promote and recognize excellence in sustainable design, environmental stewardship, and community impact and highlight the green building initiatives and achievements of local projects, businesses, and individual leaders,” states USGBC NCR. They continue, “given in several categories, our Project Awards honor innovative, high-performance projects that are leading the way to a greener tomorrow for all in the DMV region.” (USGBC National Capital Region, June 8 2022 post)

Innovative Project of the Year, Health and Wellness in the Built Environment: APTA Headquarters

The new American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) headquarters, dubbed “The APTA Centennial Center” is located in DC’s Potomac Yard neighborhood. The seven-story building was constructed on a tract of former railroad land. It features a floating stairwell in the atrium and another stairway on the exterior of the building to encourage physical activity within and without. The ‘’movement” theme continues with the nearby trails outside and a bicycle café inside. Our design and construction team for this LEED Silver project included Gensler architects, Orr Partners for project management, and Davis Construction. Learn more about this innovative project here.

Green Schools Award: Marie Reed Community Learning Center

The Marie Reed Community Learning Center, located in DC’s Adams Morgan neighborhood, was built in 1977 in the mid-20th-century “brutalist” style, characterized by austere, exposed concrete. Our renovation created a more welcoming space for the students and for the community alike. Key changes included opening up the barrel vault roof structure to introduce new skylights for daylighting, as well as a new lobby addition to connect multiple levels and spaces. Our design and construction team for this LEED Gold project included Quinn Evans architects, Wiles Mensch civil engineers, and Gilbane Building Company. Innovative Project of the Year, New Construction: 1771 N Street NW

1771 N Street NW, located between DC’s Historic Dupont Circle and the Golden Triangle, was originally constructed in the 1960’s. This 60,000 square foot office space underwent a magnificent transformation with a new six-story glass façade and spacious entry plaza. Our design and construction team, collaborating with Owner/Developer Stream Realty Partners for this LEED Gold project included HOK architects, Wiles Mensch civil engineers, and Davis Construction.
