Washington, DC

On Saturday, January 26, 2019, SK&A team members Catherine Pastoor, Kellie Farster, Macenzie Smith, and Naina Bhanot, participated in the STEM Fair: How Women Work in the Design And Building Industry held at the District Architecture Center.  Organized by the Washington Architectural Foundation, the event provided an opportunity for 125 girls in the Washington Metro area to meet women from various design-related fields in the A/E/C industry while partaking in interactive activities.

The SK&A team presented an activity on building structures and how wind loads impact them.  Participants were tasked to pick a building material such as gummy bears, plastic straws, push pins, toothpicks, and play dough to build any structure they want.  The goal was to build a tall structure that won’t blow over in the wind.  Once the structures were complete, they were tested against a fan to see if they can withstand the wind loads.
