Based on the principles of our firm’s founders, SK&A provides sound, creative, and practical structural engineering services, while adapting and keeping abreast of advancements in technology, design, and construction practices as well as changes within our surrounding environment and community at large. Our firm's senior principals are seasoned professionals, offering structural engineering career spans averaging 30+ years. The in-depth knowledge and experience of our leadership team guide our firm's evolution while ensuring the practical application of our core principles.

History

1960

1960

The firm was originally founded in 1960 by the late Alexis (Alex) Smislova as Alexis Smislova, PE.  Alex was subsequently joined by Thomas Carcaterra and together they formed Smislova & Carcaterra Consulting Engineers in Silver Spring, MD.

1963

Azer Kehnemui joined the firm in 1963, upon completion of his graduate degree at the University of Illinois. 

1965

The firm relocated its office from Silver Spring to newly constructed offices in 6101 Executive Boulevard in Rockville, MD.

1966

Azer became an Associate of the firm, Smislova and Associates, following Carcaterra’s separation from the firm.

1970

1975

The firm was incorporated in the State of Maryland, under its current name, Smislova, Kehnemui & Associates, P.A., with Alex and Azer as the sole Owners and Principals.

1976

Following the passing of Mr. Smislova, Azer became the firm’s Principal and Sole Owner. 

1977

Cetin Karabulut joined SK&A as an Associate and Senior Manager, becoming a Principal of the firm in later years.

1979

Azer co-founds an independent structural testing and inspection company, Eastern Testing and Inspection Corporation (ETI), for the purpose of providing quality control monitoring of structural construction as well as laboratory and field testing.

1980

1980

To accommodate its expansion, SK&A moves to the Atrium Building, one of the firm’s newly designed office buildings.

1981

SK&A begins to offer structural repair and restoration design services, complementing the firm’s full breadth of structural consulting services.

1982

SK&A opens a branch office in the District of Columbia located at 1709 N Street, NW.

1984

SK&A incorporates Computer Aided Design (CADD) services within its practice.

1984

Marcia Camarda, PE joins SK&A providing structural engineering. Her previous experience includes practicing civil engineering.

1985

Cetin Karabulut is named a Principal and Partner of the firm. Cetin served with Azer as the sole Principals of the firm until the late 1990’s.

1989

David (Dave) Rodler, PE joins SK&A as a Project Engineer.

1990

1991

SK&A forms its Repair & Restoration Division, providing a separate group of specialists for the repair, rehabilitation and alteration of existing and new buildings.

1993

Guy Razzi, PE joins SK&A, bringing significant prior engineering experience in the Washington, DC area. 

1994

Shortly after advancing to Project Manager, Dave is subsequently promoted to his current role as the Director of the Repair & Restoration Division. 

1996

Guy is named a Principal and Partner with SK&A.

1998

Marcia is also named a Principal and Partner with SK&A.

1999

SK&A establishes its online presence.

2000

2000

Cetin Karabulut is assigned as the firm’s Quality Assurance Director. Dave Rodler, PE is named a Principal and Partner of the firm, joining Azer, Cetin, Guy and Marcia as owners.

2005

The DC office became a separate entity, incorporated in Washington, DC as SK&A Structural Engineers, PLLC and obtains local, small business status within the District. In addition, Scott Stewart, PE joined the firm as a Project Manager, bringing a wealth of experience, including a focus on academic facilities.

2006

SK&A upgrades software and trains personnel to utilize Building Information Modeling (BIM). Additionally, Principal, Marcia Camarda initiates the firm’s LEED efforts in the design of sustainable projects.

2007

Cetin retires from firm management and Charles Mitchell joins SK&A as Director of Construction Administration. 

2008

Azer retires from firm management, transitioning to a second generation of Principals assuming senior leadership roles within the firm. Charles is named General Manager and Vice President of ETI.

2009

Scott Stewart, PE becomes a Principal and Partner of the firm. In early 2009, the DC office relocated to its current location on Connecticut Avenue and M Street, NW. Similarly, SK&A’s MD office and ETI move to their current Park Potomac location, off of I-270.

2010+

2011

Walid Choueiri, PE, SE and Hakan Onel, PE, SE are promoted to Principals/Partners, joining Scott as a member of SK&A’s third generation of leadership.

2013

J. Brent Stephens, PE, a member of SK&A’s Repair and Restoration Division, is named a Principal/Partner of the firm.

2013

SK&A obtains registration as a small business in Virginia's Small, Women and Minority (SWaM) program.

2016

SK&A and affiliate, ETI, move steps from their former building in the Park Potomac mixed-use development to a new, larger space at 12435 Park Potomac Avenue, Suite 300.

2020

SK&A celebrates 60 years of providing outstanding structural engineering services.

2020

Eastern Testing and Inspection (ETI) transitions to offering Testing & Inspection Services under SK&A's Repair & Restoration Division.

2021

Scott Stewart, PE, SE, is promoted to Sr. Principal with SK&A.

2021

Josh Woolcock, PE, LEED AP, is named a Principal and Partner with SK&A.

2022

Marcia Camarda, PE, LEED AP transitions to Principal Emeritus with SK&A.

2022

Walid Choueiri, PE, SE, J. Brent Stephens, PE, and Hakan Onel, PE, SE are elevated to Sr. Principals with SK&A.    

2022

Seth Rogge, PE, SE is named Principal and Partner with SK&A.

2022

Scott Stewart, PE, SE, named President and Managing Principal with SK&A.

2023

Cindy Garman, PE, BECxP, CxA+BE is named Principal and Partner with SK&A.

2023

David Rodler, PE transitions to Principal Emeritus with SK&A.
