At SK&A, giving back to the community isn’t just something we do, it’s part of who we are. From mentoring emerging professionals to engaging with future STEM leaders, we believe in sharing our time and expertise to strengthen both our industry and our community.
This summer, SK&A Associate Catherine Pastoor, PE, SE, joined other local engineers to volunteer at the DACkids Summer Camp, hosted by the Washington Architectural Foundation / District Architecture Center and AIA|DC. The camp introduces elementary school students to the world of architecture and design, with hands-on activities that spark curiosity and creative thinking.
Catherine, alongside engineers from Walter P Moore, TDL Engineers, and WDP & Associates, helped campers explore the vital role that engineering plays in the built environment. From stability and safety to shape and strength, the session encouraged young minds to think critically about how buildings stand and why that matters.
“The campers were so curious and eager to learn,” said Catherine. “It was fun to see them start connecting the dots between what they see in the city around them and the engineering concepts behind it. We hope we’ve inspired at least a few young hearts to chase the dream of engineering!”
We’re grateful to the Washington Architectural Foundation for inviting us to be part of this experience and to Catherine for representing SK&A’s ongoing commitment to education, mentorship, and community engagement.
