Structural Analysis for
Chinatown Redevelopment

December 12, 2024

SK&A Structural Engineers is delighted to have been mentioned in a recent Washington Business Journal article by Ben Peters for our role in Monument Realty’s revitalized project in Washington, D.C.’s historic Chinatown neighborhood. Monument is moving forward with a downsized version of its previously envisioned multifamily development at 616 Eye St. NW.

This project involves the demolition of a blighted warehouse that has sat vacant for over 40 years. Monument engaged SK&A to conduct a detailed structural survey and condition evaluation of the deteriorating building and to render an opinion on the facility’s structural integrity and serviceability. Our evaluation determined that the warehouse was damaged beyond repair, and we recommended its complete demolition to move forward with the redevelopment.

The development is now expected to feature a seven- to eight-story residential building with 80 to 100 units, a scaled-back version of the originally approved 10-story, 145-unit concept from 2015. Construction is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2025, pending final approvals. SK&A is honored to collaborate with Monument Realty on this transformative project, which will breathe new life into a historic block of Chinatown.
