Tucker Road Ice Rink

SK&A served as the Building Enclosure Commissioning Authority (BECxA) and provided Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) services pursuant to NIBS Guideline 3-2012, ASHRAE Guideline 0, and the 2012 International Green Construction Code (IgCC) for the Tucker Road Ice Rink.  SK&A developed the commissioning process by which the design and construction of building enclosure materials, components, and assemblies are designed and validated to meet IgCC requirements and other defined objectives and requirements of the project, as established by the owner.   In this role, SK&A also provided comprehensive technical reviews of the building enclosure and the various air, water, thermal, and vapor control materials and components and systems during the schematic design, design development, and construction documents phases. SK&A advised the project team on technical matters, provided recommendations for the development of details, systems and assemblies, and reviewed documents for completion and coordination. Recommendations for the functional performance testing of the building enclosure components and assemblies were also provided and fully incorporated into the commission program and project requirements.

Turkish American Community Center (TACC)

SK&A provided structural engineering services for the development of the new Turkish American Cultural Center in Prince George’s County, Maryland.  The center serves as a cultural home for the Turkish-American community within the Washington metropolitan area.

The 15-acre campus features multiple buildings positioned around a centrally-located Mosque with dual 210-foot tall Minarets (towers), an Ablution area, and two separate fountains.  The additional buildings include a reception hall, Turkish bath/sports center, theology center, and guesthouse building, with shell space for a future school.  

Underground parking (150,700 sf) for approximately 500 cars extends below the reception hall, Turkish bath, Mosque, and the landscaped/hardscaped plaza.  The development also includes 10 individual single-family homes for guest housing.  The buildings are designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.

ADA University Athletic Center and Student Housing

SK&A is providing structural engineering services for a new student housing and athletic center building for the ADA University in Baku, Azerbaijan.  The facility will be seven stories with two basement levels.

The building will also contain graduate and undergraduate student housing, guest housing, an athletic center, a bookstore, and a parking garage.  The athletic facility will include a basketball court, a fitness center, and a glass cube area.  The building structure will be poured-in-place reinforced concrete.  

Southern Regional TechRec Complex

Located in Prince George’s County, MD, the Southern Regional TechRec Complex is a state-of-the-art, multigenerational community facility providing a broad range of recreational and technology resources.  The facility’s features include: a double court gymnasium with suspended running track, a large multi-purpose room, fitness rooms, a climbing wall, classrooms, group exercise areas, a kitchen, a professional recording studio, a dance studio, soccer and multi-purpose fields, and parking spaces for 200 cars.  The building also includes a vegetative green roof, cafe and lounge areas, computer and science labs, and an open viewing gallery.

The highlight of the facility’s façade is an expansive multi-colored glass curtain wall system, running the length of the building.  Additional design elements include perforated metal paneling within the exterior façade and a curving steel stairway leading to the mezzanine viewing area.  The building’s design has received multiple awards, including “Public Building of the Year” from the American Institute of Architects’s (AIA)/Maryland, a “Gold Award for Architectural Excellence” from AIA/Potomac Valley and a “Detail Award in Architecture” from AIA/DC.

Barry Farms Recreation Center

A new 46,000 sf single-level community recreation facility located in the Barry Farms neighborhood in Southeast Washington, DC.  The masonry building’s layout has three “pods,” the main pod (gym, entry and lobby), a central pod (community use rooms), and a third pod housing the pool house and mechanical rooms with a rooftop playground.  A courtyard provides additional external space, serving as an outdoor room.

The project features an 11,000 sf full court gymnasium, an enclosed natatorium with slides, multi-purpose rooms, teen and senior rooms, a computer lab, gamer area, locker room, kitchen, and a single-story attached parking garage with dual outdoor basketball courts above.  Additional roof space is utilized for a terrace/tot lot and green roofs.
