The central staircase at JBG's Headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD serves as the main focal point of the space. The iconic three story “floating” staircase is constructed of steel stringers and painted with a high gloss with a luminous auto body finish. Other features include glass treads, landings, and guardrails supported by a one-inch center rod attached to the slab above with minimal diagonal bracing. In addition, the installation of the stair took over 2,000 night hours to complete and has over 800 machined parts and 1,000 screws.
Awarded a LEED Platinum Commercial Interiors (CI) rating in 2013, the project also received the Award of Merit for Best Interiors Professional Services/Institutional Tenant Space over 25,000 sf from NAIOP Maryland/DC and the floating stair received the Star Award for Visual Excellence from the Washington Building Congress (WBC) in 2013. In 2014, the floating stair also received an Outstanding Project Award in the Specialized Structural Elements category from the Structural Engineers Association of Metropolitan Washington (SEA-MW).
